THE IMPACT OF HOMELESSNESS IN SCHOOLS

Ironically it is the tech boom that has made housing unaffordable for so many.  "Many of the homeless work regular jobs, in some cases serving the very people whose sky-high net worth is the reason housing has become unaffordable for so many." AP

In one school in the heart of Silicon Valley, 44% of the students identify as homeless. 

Here are the National Statistics about the impact of homelessness on students. 
  • 3x's more likely to be placed in special education programs
  • 2x's more likely to miss school
  • 4x's more likely to drop out of school
  • More likely to have emotional and behavioral problems.  ​​

      I was a public school teacher for 20 years.  I graduated from the University of Colorado, received my teaching credential and MA from San Francisco State University, received Fulbright-Hays Summer Fellowships to both China (1991) and India (1999) and achieved National Board Certification in 1996 in the area of Adolescence and Young Adulthood Art.
